Last year, we covered the release of the original SmallRig Mini Matte Box. Directly competing with the popular Tilta Mini Matte Box, this product features an overall well-thought-out design and an extremely accessible price of $99.

The recently-released SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro and Lite aren’t really “new” products. However, they introduce minor changes to the original design that many professionals will appreciate. Let’s take a closer look.

Pro and Lite versions: overview
Like the original Mini Matte Box, the Pro and Lite versions can be directly mounted on lenses with a front diameter of up to 95mm. SmallRig offers several adapter rings for lenses ranging from 52 to 86mm. These matte boxes can simultaneously accommodate one circular filter and up to two rectangular filters (4×5.65” or 4×4”). The filter tray system seems to be very well-made. It features a multi-point silicon lining to protect the filter and a carrying handle to avoid leaving fingerprints. Now let’s move on to what’s new.

Pro version: re-designed flags
The SmallRig Mini Matte Box Pro (3680) shares the same design as the original model, but it comes with a slightly larger package of accessories and a revised flag system.

In fact, the top flag has been re-designed and is now equipped with side wings that can open up to 40°. Moreover, side flags have been added as well and they should provide more precise control over undesired flares and glares.
